The third episode of Fangirls Going Rogue welcomed the New Year with an informative and enthusiastic discussion with our esteemed guest, Mark Newbold of Radio 1138 and Jedi News. Tricia and Teresa shared some of their favorite feedback, filled with insights from fellow fans as well as questions for the hosts.

First up, Kim Kano’s email provided Tricia with a chance to explain the Bechdel Test and how it can be used to guide storytellers to include female characters in roles that don’t just have them supporting the male characters. Teresa reviewed the Vocativ infographic on 2013’s movies that did or didn’t pass the test (via The Mary Sue). Mark pointed out that the test is just one way to ensure women are treated equally on screen.

In his email to Fangirls Going Rogue, Matthew Munoz asked about the costumes for the female characters of Star Wars. Teresa and Tricia shared some quick thoughts on the topic and their own cosplaying experience. Previously they had appeared on a special podcast hosted by Star Wars Report that discussed feminism and the sexualization of female characters as related to Star Wars.

Finally, Christoph Wagner’s email touched on Teresa’s most underrated part of Star Wars: it’s opening.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

Teresa, Tricia, and Mark agreed that wiser words have not been spoken in a while, and that the Galaxy Far Far Away could use some more texture as far as showing worlds at different levels of technological and social development in the vein of Star Trek.

After congratulating Ashley Eckstein of Her Universe for making the Daily Dot’s 10 Fandom Game Changers of 2013 list, Teresa and Tricia asked Mark Newbold about being a fanboy and how he maintains a successful news blog while also writing for Star Wars Insider, holding down a job, and balancing it all out with his family life. Lots of great advice during this segment.

For the character discussion this month, Teresa picked the Millennium Falcon. That’s not a character, you say? Listen to the segment and you might just change your mind!
